Use of a/an
a is used before a word beginning with a consonant, or a vowel with a consonat sound:
  a tree a big house a noisy street  
  a utensil

an is used before words beginning with a vowel or words beginning with a mute h:
  an apple an egg an inspector  
  an hour
an is also used before individual letters spoken with a vowel sound:
  an MP an SOS    


Omission of a/an
Before plural nouns:
  an apple -> apples  
  an hour -> hours
Before some uncountable nouns which use some, any, no or a little:
  I want some tea    
  I don't want any help
