All Hail!
•  Ever wondered about those statues of riders on horses that you see all over the place? Well, if the horse has both front legs in the air, this means that the rider died in battle. If the horse has only one front leg in the air, then the rider died from his injuries received in battle. But if the horse has all legs, both front and back firmly on the ground, Then the rider died of natural causes, and probably at home in his bed.
                      Origin of expressions
•  ‘Good night, sleep tight ‘
In medieval times, mattresses were secured on bedframes with ropes. When the ropes were pulled, the mattress tightened, hence making the bed firmer. Hence the expression.
•  ‘Rule of Thumb’
In the 1400’s a law was passed in England stating that a man could beat his wife with a stick no thicker than his thumb.
And now for some drinking slogans….
•  Mind your p’s and q’s
In old England drinks were served in pints and quarts ( the pints are still in use today). When customers, after a few rounds began to get boisterous, the landlord would shout ‘mind your pints and quarts!’ This over time has become p’s and q’s, meaning to be on your best behaviour. Fascinating stuff!
•  Whet your whistle
Again, in times passed, in public houses ( or pubs, as they are better known now), drinking mugs has little whistles baked into them. So when the customer wanted a refill, He blew the whistle and the landlord came to serve him. Not a bad idea!
